Partial Scan
This dialog limits the number of files to scan for when there is insufficient computer
memory (RAM) to scan for all files at once. In a typical scenario, this
command may unnecessarily complicate the recovery. It should only be used by
expert users or under our Technical Support advice.
Memory usage status can be
monitored in the Windows Task Manager. Each 5,000 files require about 1 megabytes of memory. For example, if you expect
2,000,000 files to be found, the computer should have about 400 megabytes of memory in addition to a base amount Windows itself requires.
When memory is lacking, the computer may enter a "thrashing" state and performance is severely degraded, causing unusually long scan
times. In the most severe cases, File Scavenger® may even abort with "Out of memory" errors. In the example just mentioned, if your
computer only has 256 MB of RAM, you should limit each scan to 1,000,000 files. That means the disk will need to be scanned 2 times as follows:
Scan for 1,000,000 files. Save the files.
Scan for the remaining files after skipping the first 1,000,000 files. Then save them.
The end results should be
identical to scanning for all files at once on a computer with sufficient
memory.
Scan for up to ... files
The number of files to scan for.
after skipping the first ... files
The number of files to skip before displaying the number of files mentioned above.
