Start a new disk copy session

Select the source drive

To start a new copy operation, first select the faulty drive as the source. (Otherwise see Resume a disk copy session.)

Typically you will select a physical drive such as "Disk 1", "Disk 2", etc. You can click on the command "Show drive letters" to display and then select a logical drive as the source. However, such an operation is only meaningful in very special cases.

If the faulty drive is not listed, it may not have been detected by the BIOS. See "Determine the status of a hard drive".

Select the destination

The second step is to select a destination which can be either a dedicated blank hard drive or a disk image file.

Start copying

Finally click "Copy" to start the operation. The program will display its progress. See "Main dialog" for detail.

Click on "Stop" to stop the operation. You can resume it by clicking on "Copy" again.

If Disk Recoup™ or Windows® hangs on reading the source disk, you will need to reboot the computer and resume the copy operation. You can tell the program is hung if the copy statistics do not change for many seconds.

When the copy operation file is complete but with some unreadable sectors, you can click on Copy again. Disk Recoup™ will try and copy the missing sectors and usually will successfully read some more. You can keep doing this until no more sectors can be read.
